What is temazepam used for?
Temazepam is commonly used to treat certain types of a sleep problem called insomnia, which can include symptoms like trouble falling asleep and waking up often during the night.
Temazepam may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.
How does temazepam work (mechanism of action)?
Temazepam produces a calming effect on the brain and nerves, which helps you fall asleep and reduces how often you wake up during the night.

How should I store?
Temazepam should be stored at room temperature, between 68 F to 77 F (20 C to 25 C). It can be exposed to temperatures between 59 F to 86 F (15 C to 30 C) for shorter periods of time, such as when transporting it. Store in a cool, dry place.
Who should not use?
Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not take temazepam.
- Temazepam
- Restoril
- Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

What should I know about temazepam before using it?
Do not take temazepam unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Take it as prescribed.
Do not share temazepam with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.
Keep temazepam out of the reach of children. Temazepam is a controlled substance because it can be misused or lead to dependence. Store temazepam in a safe place to protect it from theft. It is illegal to sell or give away this medicine.
People who are 65 years and older can be at greater risk for some side effects of temazepam, including drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and trouble with balance or coordination with temazepam. Talk to your healthcare provider about your risks if you are in this age group.
Do not take temazepam unless you are able to stay in bed for a full night before you must be active again.
Temazepam can affect your alertness or coordination. Do not drive or do other activities that require alertness or coordination until you know how it affects you.
You may still feel drowsy the next day after taking temazepam. Do not drive or do other dangerous activities after taking this product until you feel fully awake.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before using temazepam?
Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if temazepam is right for you.
In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.
Mental Health Problems. Tell your healthcare provider about your recent and current mental health problems, especially if you have had depression, thoughts of suicide or dying, or have ever attempted suicide.
Substance Use Disorder. Temazepam is a controlled substance and may be misused or lead to dependence. Tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of a drug or alcohol disorder.
Current and Past Health Conditions. Tell your healthcare provider if you have lung disease or breathing problems.
Other Medicines and Supplements. Temazepam may interact with other medicines and supplements. Before using temazepam, tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. See the Interactions section for more details.
Pregnancy. It is not known if or how temazepam could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Taking temazepam during the later stages of pregnancy can cause withdrawal and the following symptoms in newborns.
- Breathing problems
- Sluggish
- Low muscle tone
- Jittery
- Fussiness or irritability
- Restlessness
- Shaking
- Excessive crying
- Feeding problems
Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should take this product while you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. If you become pregnant, talk to your healthcare provider about registering with the National Pregnancy Registry for Psychiatric Medications. This registry collects information about the safety of psychiatric medicines during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding. Temazepam passes into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should take this product while breastfeeding.
